Fly, fly away. Like a bird in the sky. See the world on my behalf... To the heavens may you fly... ā€” Carmen Dei Chapter: Act I

What Was the Previous State of Mondstadt?

Today, Mondstadt prides itself on its glory as the city of wind and freedom. Looking back at its earliest days, however, we can see that it wasn't always the bright and carefree city that we know now. In this page, we shall dive into the history of the Decarabian Era of Mondstadt.

Decarabian and the City of Mondstadt

Decarabian, also known as the God of Storms, the Lord of the Tower, and one of the Kings of Ice and Frost, is the god of Anemo that established the City of Mondstadt. He lived before the original Seven were established, over 2,600 years before the present date. There's little to no known information about his origins as of now.

Decarabian established the City of Mondstadt, nowadays referred to as Old Mondstadt, in the area that is currently known as Stormterror's Lair. During the time of his reign, the Land of the Wind was just a frozen wasteland under the control of the Wolf-King Andrius. In order to protect his people from the harsh conditions outside, Decarabian enclosed the city within a wind barrier that prevented anyone from entering or exiting. To him, this meant that his people wouldn't have to struggle in the cold conditions outside of the city. To his people, he had selfishly trapped them.

The city was organized in an orderly manner, and as Decarabian looked down upon the city from his tall, lonely tower, he saw his reign to be a good one. This disconnect from the people, however, prevented him from seeing their discontent with their windy prison. Although his motivation was not malicious, he did not understand the needs of humanity, and his people saw him as a tyrant.

While the harsh winds inside the capital bent the backs of Decarabian's subjects, the god thought they bowed to him out of adoration and respect; he thought they loved him as he loved them. At one point, he even took up a human lover called Amos. Amos loved Decarabian blindly, but she later realized his understanding of love was different from humanity's.

In a barren ancient time, when the now-verdant land was still but a wasteland, a maiden, barefoot in the snow, followed the footsteps of the Lord of the Tower. ā€” Amos' Bow

The Rebellion

Andrius

For unknown reasons and for an unknown amount of time, the Wolf-King of the North, Andrius (also known as Lupus Boreas) wanted to remove Decarabian from his position. Andrius declared war on him, but despite his immense strength, he failed to even land a scratch on the impenetrable wind barrier.

The Gunnhildr Clan

The Gunnhildr Clan was a family clan that once served under Decarabian. Their leader became disillusioned with Decarabian's rule, and he led his clan away to travel the frozen wilderness outside.

The clan nearly perished in the blizzard, but they were saved by a certain wind spirit who, empowered by their faith, was able to create a small shelter to protect them from the wind and ice.

Just when all hope seemed to be lost for the wandering clan, a spirit from the midst of the myriad winds heard Gunnhildr's prayers. The sincere plea of a clan chief's young daughter joined with a people's cry of help, a cry that the blizzard had all but drowned out, and became a faith. ā€” Biography of Gunnhildr

The Resistance

It would soon come to pass that a certain bard, a young boy who yearned to see the world beyond the wind barrier, would form a bond with a "wisp of a thousand winds"ā€”a formless elemental creature referred to as an "elf". In the near future, the wisp would also be called Barbatos.

Together with the elf, Amos, a nameless Red-Haired Warrior, and the Gunnhildr Clan (who returned to participate in the rebellion), the Nameless Bard planned and executed a mass rebellion against Decarabian. The battle was successful and Mondstadt was liberated, though both the Nameless Bard and Amos perished in the fight.
